  1. It’s almost as if the film was playing with the shades of grey of leadership roles in a deliberate attempt to highlight the characters’ various flaws. The point wasn’t that either Poe or Holdo were right, it was that their respective prejudices towards each other prevented them from communicating effectively and finding the right solution. Unfortuantely we we live in a very partisan society so a lot of this subtlety was really lost in translation.

  4. Am I the only one who didn’t care much for The Rebellion is Reborn? Not that it is a bad score - by any means! - but in hindsight, it’s probably my least listened to SW score. It never settles for a mood, it jumps around too much. None of the musical ideas seem to be given time to gestate or are given room to breathe - it’s always on to the next thing. I totally get that people are in to that, but it’s just not my type of cup.

  5. Even if it's editorially created, the finale suite for TLJ (album version) does actually cover pretty much all the new thematic material from the score, including Rose's Theme, Luke's new theme, Holdo's Theme, the Desperation/Besieged Resistance motif, and the separate recurring motif that underpins key moments of the Resistance suffering defeats (such as the Resistance bombers taking each other out in Escape and again as Luke is blasted by all the AT-M6 walkers). Arguably the only other notable motif that isn't featured in the credits medley is the Canto Bight motif.

  7. I've been picking up these remasters in a haphazard way, some I've purchased such as the prequels, others I've downloaded still deciding whether it's worth purchasing them. Just listened to Empire... ...what happened? It just sounds so off, so distant and dare I say it, old. I spent a majority of last week on my commute to university listening to the 2004 Sony 2 disc edition and that has heft, it has a punch and prominence to it - it's by no means perfect or the best sounding of the three, but it sounds bright and forefront and still feels powerful. The biggest grievance I have with this 'remaster' is the complete degradation of one of my favourite musical sequences, The Battle of Hoth, with many amazing individual passages that are just buried in the mix, or buried by reverb and white noise fuzz - something best described as a ghost orgy, where it sounds dated and the opposite of a remaster. Hearing this remastered set pains me that it's 2018 and we're getting sub-par re-releases instead of fully-fledged deluxe archival editions that pay respect to the originals, provide all of the available recordings and most importantly deliver them sounding as good as is currently possible. I don't understand how these sets have been handled when we have other examples of Shawn Murphy's work which demonstrates a great ability to mix a good sounding score. Was it a bad transfer, were the tapes damaged, was this rushed out for Star Wars Day, is this a placeholder for future releases just for Disney to flex their commercial powers to try and rid people's conscience of the sony sets? Who knows?

  10. Perhaps Holdo should've told Poe, but I think what they were trying to go for was the fact that Poe isn't a hero, he is a hot-headed flyboy, it wasn't a message of blind obedience, it should've been trust in the admiral's plan and they make a point of this by having Poe act out in desperation!

  11. I absolutely love The Last Jedi! Don't get me wrong, it had it's faults, (as if any of the other Star wars movies did not, maybe not Empire so much) like I did not believe there was any chemistry between Rose and Finn, and she should have just been at the front end of the movie and not gone off ship, which would have given Del Toro more screen time with Finn and therefor a better part in the movie. But all in all it was a high stakes different movie which was all about failure and consequences.

  13. Hi Folks, Many probably know about this already from the FSM board, Facebook etc. but I am in the middle of an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to make a sci-fi short film (which will, incidentally, be scored by Ron Jones of ST:TNG and Family Guy)—my new career as a filmmaker! I am offering a wide variety of CDs, coupon codes (at Intrada, La-La Land and BuySoundtrax, anywhere from 10% to 30% off), blu rays and other items (all kindly donated to me by the labels and manufacturers). For example, La-La Land's 15CD ST:TOS box set and 50th Anniversary Collection 4CD set are available together with free shipping for $199. Please visit the campaign and view the video: http://igg.me/at/skyfighter Thank you! Lukas Kendall

  14. We just kind of, work through them - all the decisions are made purely on a give-take basis on the moment. As we both write together we don't usually have that process of being responsible for certain cues etc, although on occasion we have tried delegating "motifs" to be written individually then brought into the joint writing. This didn't really change the process though - usually you end up with something that sounds better than what you came up with originally!

  15. Obviously casual fans and listeners aren't going to care, but to someone who regularly lives and breathes the scores, the remasters are imposters!

  18. My thoughts. Wyatt Earp - It's fine. Great score and production design, plus a superb cast, but a little too long, and kinda aimless. I haven't seen Paper Towns, not really my kind of film honestly. Carrie - Not a fan. Failed to capture what made the 1976 version work so well. Performances aren't bad, but as far as remakes / readaptations of old Stephen King novels, I didn't much care for it. Mean Girl - Classic. One of the movies that probably defined the mid 2000's for a lot of teens / young adults. Sharp script, and performances (Rachel McAdams being a particular standout), plus it features Lohan before she went crazy. I've seen it several times, and I still highly recommend it. It's endlessly quotable and hilarious.

  19. Decent enough western, although a bit heavyhanded. The score is one of JNH's best. Haven't seen it, but Ryan Lott's score is excellent! Skip it, and watch the original classic instead, if you haven't already. Not a fan of Tina Fey, but it's one of those pop cultural films giving nourishment to Lindsay Lohan's "persona". So better viewed for that than any particular filmatic quality. But I suggest you watch ELECTION, RUSHMORE or CLUELESS instead. Or any of the 80s high school classics (FAST TIMES, BREAKFAST CLUB, SIXTEEN CANDLES, PRETTY IN PINK etc.).

  27. @Docteur Qui If only it were that simple because I think that might be the case, but not entirely so for this film. I think there are two themes that pervade the film and those are the themes of desperation and failure - desperation was the root cause for the lack of effective communication between Holdo and Poe. In the film it is unquestionably the case that Holdo was in the right and that Poe's reaction is what almost sabotages that plan. She has no obligation to tell Poe her plans - in this way I think it's a neat exposé in the sense that it's showing us a role reversal for the typical hero, that they're the center of attention or in positions of power afforded to them as a consequence of their importance in the plot. Luke in ANH is setup to be a brilliant pilot and ends up fighting for the rebels in the squadron in the end battle but I think that's only a consequence of him being the protagonist where I wouldn't necessarily find it agreeable to include a rookie recruit in such a daring battle plan. Yet in Luke's case, it could be argued that it was the Force guiding him, or the rebels are in need of pilots, or that it's simply the case that it was a nice action set-piece for the character to be involved in. Both Holdo and Leia know of Poe's heroic deeds, but both also understand that his actions are reckless - the opening space battle all but confirms this, they barely escaped losing all of their bombers, only to destroy one dreadnought ship.

  30. Joker is the key to all this. He's a funnier character than we've had before in these Nolan films.

  31. To me Nolan absolutely and utterly fails at a human level. I feel I have never seen a truly human moment in any of his movies (and no mccoughney bursting into tears doesn't count). It is just the basic fundamental - seeing a human being on screen and comprehending that they have human concerns and human feelings and human thoughts and human foibles. Nolan's movies contain vapid androids with a few characteristics assigned to them with bullet points rather than crafting complex 3 dimensional human characters. Add all of that to his pompous film-making style and I feel like if say humanity is destroyed and aliens come to Earth and only Nolan's film survive in digital form - the aliens will fundamentally misconstrue and misunderstand humanity - because that is what Nolan does in his films.

  32. On projects like this we work together for sure! We find that having two heads rather than one can help propel some ideas to something beyond what you might have come up with on your own. Of course, it does lead to the occasional moment where you feel like your own idea genuinely is better (!), but on the whole it probably also speeds up the process slightly - anything that may have been weird or on a tangent to the overall music arc has usually already been corrected at the source rather than much further on That's of course not to say that you don't occasionally end up with other scenarios though...

  33. Considering Indy V is yet to be frickin' released, that's a perfectly legitimate stance!

  34. The biggest blot on the film is Koepp's screenplay, nearly totally devoid of the wit, erudition and lightness of touch of Stoppard's Last Crusade. Following from that, you have wonderful actors like Hurt and Winston wasted in archetypal cypher roles that do little to showcase their particular talents. The less of Blanchett and the colossal failure of her accent coach, the better.

    Star Wars Concert Suites

So we can add Han Solo's theme to this, yes? It joins Rey's Theme, March of the Resistance, Scherzo for X-Wings, The Jedi Steps, Jedi Steps and Finale, The Rebellion is Reborn and Han Solo and the Princess as Williams' "third age" of Star Wars concert suites. If we're super lucky, we'll get another 3 new suites in Episode IX (hopefully two new theme arrangements and an epic end credits suite to complete the trilogy of trilogies).

  38. Millennials probabky make up the majority of SJW though. It’s older generations that I find have the problem. Mostly people who grew up with the OT I find to be the most bigoted and close minded of fans. Jet fuel can’t melt decade long fan theories!!

  41. Eh, I don't like them for several reasons. One is for the same reason I don't download sessions, leaks, boots, etc. I'm more of the FSM mindset than the JWFan mindset as far as the impact of such things on the industry. Also, in my opinion, when I finally spend $30 on a legit, complete release, and I have far more than just 15 minutes of unheard music, it will be much more exciting for me than, say, Close Encounters or E.T. which (while they sound great and are arranged nicely) really didn't offer much in the way of "new."
