  1. My son has shown a lot of interest in music and when I ask him what he wants to listen to he often picks Star Wars. For his 4th birthday I was able to take him to see the film in concert.

  2. Although I have attended a lot of concerts featuring John Williams' music for the Star Wars films over the years, this one had so much that I had not heard live in concert before. You could tell the concert had been put together by genuine Williams fans, so well done to @mahler3 (whom I spotted waiting in the wings a few times!) and to @TownerFan who was evidently responsible for the informative and pleasingly accurate programme notes. As well as the UK concert premiere of music from The Rise of Skywalker posted above by @Biodome, yesterday was the first time I had heard the revised version of Han Solo and the Princess in concert. It might take a bit of getting used to, but having heard it live I think it's a grower. I was happy that the full version of Luke and Leia (apparently conductor Stephen Bell's favourite piece of music from the saga) was played rather than the truncated version heard sometimes more recently. The Lucasfilm Logo, The Adventures of Han Solo and The Rebellion is Reborn were also treats which I had not sampled live before. I thought the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was excellent yesterday evening. I did not notice any flubbed notes at all, the exposed horn solos in Princess Leia's Theme and Luke and Leia usually very unforgiving but both played perfectly. I was in the choir seats immediately behind the xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, cowbells, etc. and I loved watching the percussionists dart about between the various instruments. I had not noticed before that the opening of Rey's Theme was played on vibraphone, glockenspiel and marimba. It was also nice that the conductor made the first violins stand after The Asteroid Field, as the other sections of the orchestra usually get the love. Here are a few grainy photos taken from my vantage point.

  3. They told us to take no pictures, no video or audio recordings, and to not post about the event on social media. Without going into the actual content, I can say that the LSO musicians and Mike were amazing to listen to. You can really feel the love they have for John Williams as a composer, conductor and musician. I remember @bigjimwilson asked about the elitism/snobism that is prevalent within some Classical music academic circles and orchestras, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker. Well, there was none of that LSO! I can also mention that my brother was lucky enough to win one of the smaller prizes. He didn't have enough space to take everything aboard the plane, so we split the loot! It was several CDs, Blu-rays, booklets, artwork, a Legacy of John Williams t-shirt and a box with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial merchandise.

  5. That was an absolutely phenomenal weekend. The event on Saturday was so good. Huge thanks to Maurizio, Tim and guests. Hugh and Eric were just wonderful to listen to. Emilio is always a pleasure, and the things Mike spoke about and shared with us were incredible. I felt genuinely spoilt. It was a great feeling to be in that room with everyone. I met some fantastic folk, and caught up with some lovely friends. And then the concert on Sunday too! I was just being spoon-fed Williams love with a shovel all weekend 😂

  6. The giant disembodied head of Mike Matessino revealed the momentous news of Wompi to a stunned audience over Microsoft Teams. The sense of shock and disbelief in the room were palpable as we tried in vain to come to terms with the bombshell and to make some sense of it all. The humanity!

  8. He seems like a lovely guy. The man has talent too. I really like his score for Avatar 2 and I'm looking forward to hearing what he's doing for the rest of the franchise. Horner would be proud, I'm sure.

  9. I think retroactively my favorite era of Star Wars is probably like 1993-2013. All the best videogames, The Clone Wars, awesome behind the scenes content and documentaries, Star Wars Hyperspace, the DVD and Blu-ray releases, the beginnings of LEGO Star Wars

  10. Can’t wait for this. Hopefully he brings back a lot of the themes from the original series. The last theme in "The Tour" from Catching Fire I especially want to see back.

  11. You are kinda barking up the wrong tree IMHO, it's less to do with style here, and more that the cue is written for a totally different (and different kind of) scene.

  15. I guess both will be released simultaneously. And if we're really really really really lucky, we get both ones this year or early next year. I hope Russel reminds Gold that he also still has to release: Years And Years, It's A Sin, Torchwood: Series 4, Gentleman Jack... the original synth music from DW Series 1, more music from Series 2-8. And A LOT MORE MUSIC FROM SERIES 9!!!

  16. While we're on the subject of Williams-ifying Spider-Man: (apologies for the video quality; it's a real quick-and-dirty edit of two YouTube videos) Initially I wanted to spin this off into its own thread: Rescore scenes based ONLY on the cue title. I decided to play it safe and post it here instead.

  18. It's exciting to find out where Franglen's career will go now. He is clearly intending to score all of Avatar, but I wonder what other opportunities he will get. He's another champion of melody and dedicated to developing themes throughout, so I hope he gets some great projects.

  20. Sony Masterworks will release the official score album for the prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The album features the film’s original score composed by Academy Award nominee James Newton Howard (King Kong, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Maleficent, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Fugitive) who previously scored all four original The Hunger Games movies. Also included are three newly reimagined piano suites based on Howard’s past themes from the franchise performed by featured soloist Yuja Wang who also performs the piano on the new score. The soundtrack is set to be released digitally and as a 2-CD set on November 17. Check back on this page for the purchase links. Geffen Records has previously released lead actress Rachel Zegler’s rendition of The Hanging Tree as a digital single last week and full separate album featuring the Dave Cobb-produced songs from the film is expected to be announced soon. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is directed by Francis Lawrence and also stars Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera and Jason Schwartzman. The movie is based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel and follows a young Coriolanus who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family, and is reluctantly assigned to mentor a tribute from the impoverished District 12. The dystopian action adventure will be released in theaters nationwide on November 17 by Lionsgate. 1. The Dark Days 2. Anthem: Gem of Panem (Instrumental) 3. Coryo in the Capitol 4. 21. Maybe this is just delusional optimism but I feel like this isn't actually a negative statement - if it was "last two decades" it would be much more sad. In the last few years we've had two official star wars expansions from other composers, increasingly long OST albums for the shows, a Blu-ray isolated score, not to mention Mike Matessino's personal involvement in a new sheet music book. I think positive things are coming, we just have to be patient

  25. I can imagine! Well, we are too - as a whole family we will embark on a short trip (not too much time for anything else, I'm afraid) to London in 12 hours to attend the Final Fantasy XIV concert at the Hammersmith Apollo today (!), a wish and stunning last-minute ticket purchase of our daughter's. Alas it's too late for the Williams event. I am sure it was quite something. Had better luck last time w/ the Video Games Live one where, a day before, I was able to attend a screening of Brazil with Terry Gilliam in attendance at the BFI. Such is life (when it's good)...

  30. This 100%. Plus, the whole idea of this thread is just having fun experimenting with mixing up different cues and scenes. The only reason I even did mine was just to see what would happen if I put the Star Wars Ben's Death over the Spider-Man Ben's Death.

  31. I don't know NMA at all (but my pop/rock music listening is quite limited) but I do highly recommend Enzso (and Enzso 2) which are big orchestral arrangements of the songs of Split Enz. Not a band I know otherwise, but a friend at work suggested these albums as she thought I'd like them and she was right. The arrangements are terrific and it has an interesting range of singers. Also, I don't know if you like Ben Folds if you like Elton John (I always say Ben Folds is like a slightly more sweary EJ!) but BF's album with the West Australia Symphony Orchestra is great, albeit on available as a DVD with not exactly the greatest sound. The arrangements (and orchestral performance) are a bit variable, but the best ones (Brick and Zak & Sara are probably by favourites) are really great. Shame he never redid the best ones in the studio.

  35. Barbie The last film I've seen at the cinema. Holy cow, I went with my wife and 2 friends of ours, and the four of us laughed our asses off the entire time, as did the whole audience. This is a really funny film full of funny performances, especially Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kingley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, and Kate McKinnon. Helen Mirren even got some good jabs in as the narrator, and the opening Lizzo song commenting on the action was funny too. The whole thing was just an enjoyable romp from start to finish It will be very interesting to see what Gerwig does next!

  36. It is the definitive experience to watch a film in my opinion (for a film score fanatic). Hearing the score be in the forefront in the "mix" is not an experience you can really have at the theater or your home. It was amazing, and obviously I think the Pittsburgh Symphony did a terrific job as always. It's truly a one of a kind experience for score fans.

  37. I got to see Giacchino's Marvel short film "Werewolf by Night" performed at the Kennedy Center with the NSO last night. It was a really fun concert, a Halloween/Spooky movie themed one. He was there, along with Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige, and they introduced many of the pieces. Giacchino was very funny and personable, and my son enjoyed it all. The first half of the concert was various scary/fun movie pieces. 1) Hans Salter's "The Incredible Shrinking Man"- the Jazzy/pop version of the music. 2) Tchaikovsky's music used in the “Phantom of the Opera” Unmasking Scene (live to picture) 3) Franz Waxman's Creation of the Female Monster from Bride of Frankenstein (short version of it) 4) Bernard Herrmann's 3 part suite from Psycho. Audience laughed at the shower music (that always annoys me) 5) Giacchino's suite from Batman (which I like the middle section of, but the repeating beginning and end are just loud and dull. Giacchino, has a tendancy to write repeating phrases that just get louder and louder, without much variation. 6) Giacchino's suite from Super 8 (live to some of his old films he made as a kid. Fun, but distracting from the music, which is one of my favorite's of his. 7) After the intermission, they did his score to Werewolf by Night. It was in color, but the film is so dark, much of it was hard to make out. They played the marvel special presentation theme, and the horror version of the Marvel them, which I love. The guitar version on the soundtrack of the main theme was sadly not played. The audience cheered and clapped at the huge brass outbursts/ jump scares. 8) for an encore, they played the theme from Coco. Fun, but I would have preferred the Incredibles or Ratatouille instead:) Everything was performed very well, the place was packed with people of all ages (some in costume). I've been a Giacchino fan since I first got his Medal of Honor soundtrack (my very first purchase on Amazon years ago). side note: The gentleman next to me recorded the entire concert from his bookbag. So it's out there somewhere!

  42. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Another one I saw in the actual cinema this summer. I never got around to saying much here about it, but I also don't know if I have any thoughts that haven't already been expressed a bunch around here. I really didn't like how they turned our hero Indy into a sad old man with a dead son who had to win back Marion yet again, I didn't like how the villains murdered random innocents who had nothing to do with the things over and over again, I didn't like adding a sci-fi concept like time travel into the world (juts as bad as adding aliens in last time), I thought the de-aging in the prologue was terrible, I just generally didn't really like anything about this movie at all. Except the score, which I quite enjoy!

  44. You seem to be bringing plenty yourself. And I would also be careful to not confuse originality with quality. A well made chair is still a chair. Williams is a more subtle craftsman in his later years, and his intricacies and beauties less obvious, but his delight in the acute art of orchestration, harmony, rhythmic spontaneity, and melodic invention have not lessened in any of the examples I mentioned.

  45. Lincoln, The BFG, The Last Jedi and the 2nd violin concerto hold up against anything he's ever written. I would be careful not to let nostalgia, or the sporadic dates of composition, or the perceived quality of the films, color my perception of the music.
