  1. Look what I found in the christmas tree What a beautiful release, from the gorgeous Jim Titus art to the perfect assembly from Mike, this is truly the expansion of the year for me. I've only listened once to the main program and I already know this is a score I'll revisit often. Can't wait to discover the additional music and the great liner notes!

  4. Not the original soundtrack recording. But apart from various suites there are two re-recordings of the full score. One conducted by Bernard Herrmann on the Unicorn Kanchana Label released in 1975 and the other being conducted by Joel McNeely with RSNO on the Varese Sarabande label. The best performance re-recorded to date has to be the Steve Bartek - Danny Elfman produced version for the verbatim 1998 remake. The OST recording is abbreviated (slightly altered performance) but highly recommended. All of these are easily available on Ebay.

  5. Attachment is not necessarily a global term. Perhaps you see it as false Buddhism because you do not understand the Buddhist take on attachment. As the very first Google result for Buddhism and attachment states: ”The Buddhist concept of non-attachment is a constructive way to approach relationships. Here, attachment refers to an attempt to control things that you can't control.” As Yoda is trying to say, you can not control death. Palpatine lures him with the idea that he can, in fact, cheat death.

  6. I can't decide which treatment of that theme I like the most - Meeting Of The Minds, Tale of the Lion's Tooth, Cinque's Legal Mind, or Cinque's Memories of Home. All great, all different! Oh wow, yes, that Going To School cue does have some similarities, doesn't it? Damn, I long for a complete edition of that score. I kind of stopped listening to any Williams scores that hadn't been expanded yet to make the eventual expansion all the more special one day, but since we have no idea when the stupid AFM rules will change, I should really just learn this score properly, shouldn't I

  9. Our Christmas Movies were Top Gun: Maverick (which doesn't fit this category) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. PotC is just about a perfect movie. Like Raiders of the Lost Ark perfect. And I don't think there's a bad performance in the film. (OK, there probably aren't many bad performances in the series. Acting talent has never been a problem.)

  13. I think people here will appreciate these. I stumbled upon some archives on the KillerMoviesForums that had some Hyperspace posts archived from 2005 that I had thought were lost forever. These were blogposts written by Pablo Hidalgo during the making of Revenge of the Sith and were posted on the paywalled Hyperspace service on starwars.com which no longer exists.   17. Elf - amiably daft and sweet seasonal fun. The Will Ferrell movie for people who don't like Will Ferrell. Skyfall - the 'Not exactly Christmas, is it?' line felt like reason enough. Craig's best, an excellent blend of new and old-school Bond.

    Either you haven't seen the interviews I have or your definitions of "intellectual" and "insightful" defer from mine. Or perhaps it's that you haven't listened closely enough to what he said or from the right point of view. Duplicitous? At times, perhaps. This devious tactic helped him succeed in getting his audience to fall hook-and-sinker for his trap... including you. You stopped responding to my substantive/longer posts some time ago - no doubt because you have no substantive responses, just dismissive ones (and laughter) along the lines of 'What you're theorizing/suggesting can't possibly be true because it runs contrary to my assessment of George Lucas and Star Wars.' You may have a higher than average vocabulary, Chen. But your intellect caps out with a pride-infused brick wall when confronted by my facts, logic, and canon excerpts that, all told, suggest something else is going on with Star Wars. Don't worry. I won't be posting any more 800-word Star Wars writings on this forum. I've already posted more than enough to prove my worth, including quite a few in response to your babble.

  20. Apparently, Jason Bourne originally was just going to be Buckley only before JP got involved fairly late (which would explain why it doesn't feel particularly inspired). In any case, it's either been speculated or confirmed that the passing of his wife might've been what contributed to him making the shift he did. I guess one can question if he's had a recent change with that, as DWD definitely tackles the more damaging aspects of relationships, but I suppose he saw it more in a psychological sense than specifically being about the violence. Either way, he probably won't be touching any big productions that aren't animation anytime soon, unless he states his intentions to go back to how he was pre the mid-2010s.

  21. Just repeating what I believe Powell has said himself: that recently he prefers to avoid scoring films where the protagonist solves all their problems with violence. Note the most recent Bourne was credited to Buckley and Powell instead of Powell only Anyway, got my copy today

  22. Look, I gave up trying to convince people of the depth and nuance present in these films years ago, because these are usually the responses I get. You do you. I don’t think it’s pseudo Zen, but actual Zen. Jedi are supermen who could, if motivated enough by greed and attachment, burn the Galaxy to the ground. This is, of course, what we see happen. I don’t know if George is an intellectual or not, but I do think he’s a genius. As a professor of mine once said, “an A student come back to work for a university. A C student comes back to donate a million dollars to a university.”

  24. The Aliens reference at 0:33! This piece is the best action piece of the score, I think. It's just pure Horner. The whole thing is a beautiful mix of Horner's action style in Aliens and Titanic with those scraping strings and metalic percussion, and then it's expertly driven with Franglen's great Family Theme throughout.

  27. Just saw the film - the score is great! The film was great too, but the score really stood out and was both interesting and effective. Can't wait to listen to the album now, but I am pretty sure already it's one of my favorites of the year

  30. I listened to all the albums again over the past few days and everytime I'm impressed with how good this is. The thought and hard work that went into this is heard in every note and I feel every note is there for a reason. This is 100% my score of the year. And @Monoverantusthanks for your video, been awaiting it and it was try a joy to watch!

  31. I will start by saying I absolutely disagree with you (please read on after my opinion though). Here's my opinion: HOWEVER... Like I said - the only way to mitigate this issue whether purposefully malicious or not would be to require the film be entirely complete before starting the marketing process. It does happen - don't films get bought by studios/distributors from festivals all the time in a complete or nearly complete form? I know sometimes the distributors request changes (like a new ending being added to the U.S. version of What If? (aka The F Word)) Personally, I wouldn't mind this necessarily. I think the entire film industry needs to slow the heck down and quit pumping so much crap out as fast as they can. I know they do it to maximize how much money they make in a year, but it would be far more beneficial to the filmmakers and the crew to take their time. They can still have a deadline - but it can be private and more related to when the marketing needs to start. Plus, if VFX need more time then they can continue to improve as the marketing begins (I feel like this would've helped out Cats as far as VFX touch ups are concerned. But no amount of amazing VFX could save that film entirely.) as long as, of course the film doesn't change substantially. Despite whatever analytics and research they rely on - you don't have to release Avatar 2 on December 16th in 2022, for example. But good luck getting Hollywood to change what they think works - It's clearly better to overwork film crews, rush out final products before they're realistically ready, and open as many films as possible in any given year. I'm aware that filmmaking is a business, but it should be a bit more of a balance between business and art, in my opinion, and it's primarily business these days. *Gets down off soapbox*

  36. I listened to it today in the car. Excellent sound. i love how arnold treated this score as it should be when a composer steps in the franchise created by another composer. He uses the james bond theme as if it where his own, he changes it, deconstructs it, uses its rythms, melds it with his own themes, play full renditions…. Not with the usual, “im afraid to step into the shoes of this composer so i subtly hint the original themes or use note by note transcriptions when i want to put the ONLY full rendition of the theme in the film”…. and the love theme and surrender song could have been in a barry film
